1. Transparent nylon structural formula and chemical basis
The core difference between the structural formula of transparent nylon (such as PA12T, PA6T/6I) and traditional nylon (such as PA6, PA66) lies in the regularity of the main chain. Taking PA12T as an example, its repeating unit structural formula is:
-[-NH-(CH₂)₁₂-NH-CO-(C₆H₄)-CO-]-
Among them, (C₆H₄) is a terephthalic acid residue, and the introduction of long methylene chains ((CH₂)₁₂) and rigid benzene rings destroys the symmetry of the molecular chain, making it difficult to form a high crystallinity structure, thereby improving the light transmittance (up to more than 90%, refer to the 2021 data of "Journal of Applied Polymer Science").
2. Key characteristics and design principles of transparent nylon
1. Low crystallinity: Disrupt the molecular arrangement through copolymerization or introduction of side chains (such as methyl, cyclohexyl), such as random copolymerization of hexamethylenediamine (6C) and isophthalic acid (6I) in PA6T/6I, which reduces the crystallinity to below 20% (40%~50% for ordinary PA66).
2. High light transmittance: Transmittance and haze are core indicators. PA12T has a transmittance of ≥88% and a haze of <3% in the visible light band (380-780nm) (ASTM D1003 standard).
3. Thermal stability: The aromatic ring structure gives higher heat resistance. For example, the melting point of PA6T is 310℃, which is better than 265℃ of PA66.
3. Application fields and future development directions
Transparent nylon is used in high-end eyeglass lenses, medical device packaging and other scenarios because it has both the processing properties of plastics and the optical properties of glass. Future research directions include:
- Developing bio-based transparent nylon (such as PA510 made from castor oil);
- Further optimizing the balance between mechanical strength and light transmittance through nanocomposite technology.
